Delhi gears up for smart rides

300 smart bikes already put out for public use at 50 stations

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has tied up with SmartBike Mobility Pvt. Ltd., a Hyderabad-based Public Bike Sharing (PBS) company to set up, operate and maintain world-class PBS System in New Delhi.

During the launch, NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar said, “New Delhi has been geared up to change the lifestyle of Delhiites by adopting cycling to improve fitness, bridge the gap of last-mile connectivity and reduce pollution.”

SmartBike Mobility chairman Manohar said that as many as 300 smart bikes have already been put out for public use at 50 stations, spread over entire New Delhi and 200 additional smart bikes are to be added to the fleet by end-2018. “In our trial phase, we got an overwhelming response where 5,000 people registered with us,” said Mr. Manohar who is also the vice-president and treasurer of World Cycling Alliance, Brussels.

NDMC 311 app

SmartBike is integrated with the NDMC 311 app and also with the existing public transport system. The bikes will be available free of cost for the first 30 minutes for members and at ₹10 for non-members. The subscription is available on weekly (₹199), monthly (₹399), half yearly (₹999) and maximum for one-year (₹1999) basis.

“Automatic front and rear LED lights powered by hub dynamo with integrated reflector make the bicycles easy and comfortable to use. The inbuilt GPS, GSM and WPAN modules for on and offline communication with central server make the bicycle safe to use. And to add the last bit, SmartBike stations are the only stations with outdoor LED panel for advertisement and touch panel for other NDMC services,” noted a release issued by the NDMC.
