Chhattarpur underground reservoir inaugurated

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated the 3.2 million gallon capacity underground reservoir (UGR) at Chhattarpur on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, she urged people to conserve water and use it judiciously. She said with progress comes responsibility, particularly as water is finite we must use it with care.

At present, water in the command areas of Chhattarpur underground reservoir is supplied by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) through tube wells and tanker services, while 325 tube wells are under operation to meet the water demand of the area.

“The 3.2 million gallon capacity underground reservoir and booster pumping station, inlet and peripheral mains will provide filtered water supply to about four lakh people. The 36-km piped connection has been constructed at a total cost of Rs.70 crore,” said a DJB spokesperson.

In the initial phase, water from the Chhattarpur UGR will be supplied to the command areas on alternate days to maintain sustainability, the spokesperson said. At present, two of the three peripheral water mains are being commissioned. The third one will be commissioned by March 2013.

Ms. Dikshit said households will soon get piped drinking water instead of water supplied through bore-wells and tankers in the area.

“There will be no dearth of money in ensuring drinking water for one and all,” she said exhorting people not to waste drinking water.

“We have to save water for the future generations. In view of the increasing population in Delhi, we all will have to concentrate on conservation. The supply of raw water from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh is limited.”
