Cabinet clears proposal to set up university to make students job-ready

Will introduce Bill in winter session of Delhi Assembly: CM

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced that the Delhi Cabinet has cleared a proposal to start a Delhi Skills and Entrepreneurial University.

The concept of the university, he said, came up as the Delhi government found that students come out of the formal education system with a BA, B.Sc or MA degree and do not find jobs.

Intake of 50,000

“We want to start a Delhi Skills and Entrepreneurial University that will be focused on providing jobs to students as soon as they graduate. The intake of the university will be 50,000 students and we will introduce the Bill to start this university in the winter session of the Delhi Assembly,” he said. He added that the aim of the university would be to focus on imparting the skills and knowledge to the youth that will equip them find a job.

“The main focus of the university will be to make the students employable and the performance of the university will be measured in terms of the kinds of jobs that the students get. The entire effort will be to ensure that students who graduate from this university get jobs,” Mr. Kejriwal said. He added that students would be able to enrol in regular and part-time courses in various streams after Class X, Class XII, and graduation and would be able to join the university for courses with durations from six months to one year or two years.

Collaborations

All existing Industrial Training Institutes and polytechnic Institutes and skill centres, he said, will be merged into this university and it would have collaborations with many foreign countries and universities as well as industry associations and companies.

“If any company agrees to provide jobs to the students, then training will be provided to students based on the requirements of the company by this university,” the Chief Minister said.

He also said that the most important feature of the university would be flexibility because the market requirements always keep changing.

He said that various governments have set up skill centres but those do not adapt to the requirements of the market. “Courses once designed will remain for 25 to 30 years without any revision or upgrade. The university will design courses after taking into consideration the relevant market research,” he added.
