A man who posed as a key maker to gain access to victims’ valuables has been arrested for allegedly committing several burglaries. The accused periodically came to the city from Indore, committed a few burglaries, and then went back to Madhya Pradesh to sell the stolen items, said the police.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said they got a complaint from a woman on April 23 about a burglary at her house in Gandhi Nagar. The complainant said she suspected a key maker to be involved.
The woman said she had called a key maker to make a duplicate key for her almirah. The accused tried to make a duplicate key for over 90 minutes after which he left the house, promising to return the next day with more tools, the police said.

After this, the woman checked the almirah and discovered gold ornaments worth ₹2.5 lakh missing from the locker. She informed her family members and reported the matter at Gandhi Nagar police station.
During the probe, the team checked CCTV cameras in the area and spotted the suspect. “We found out that the suspect’s name was Sunil and he was traced to Paharganj,” said Ms. Yadav.
On June 4, acting on a tip-off, a team checked the hotels in Paharganj and nabbed the accused. He was identified as Sunil Singh from Indore. The accused disclosed his involvement in several cases of burglary with the same modus operandi. He said that he had sold the gold items to a jeweller in Indore.

“He and other associates come from Indore and checked-in at a hotel in Paharganj. They commit burglary by posing as key makers and go back to Indore and other cities of MP to sell the stolen items,” added Ms. Yadav.
