The wife of a Bahujan Samaj Party MLA from Uttar Pradesh was found brutally murdered in her house at New Jaffrabad in North-East Delhi on Wednesday. The police suspect the involvement of someone known to the victim.

The police said Rehana’s domestic help reached the residence around 9-30 a.m. and found the door unlocked from the inside. The domestic help found Rehana (40) lying in a pool of blood in the drawing room and raised an alarm, hearing which the neighbours came rushing. The police were subsequently called.

The scene of crime was cordoned off and a team of forensic experts summoned to gather evidence from the spot. The police found two tea cups in the drawing room, which suggested that someone known to Rehana could be involved in her murder.

Police inquiries revealed that Rehana was the second wife of Haji Aleem, a BSP MLA from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. While he lives in Bulandshahr with another wife and their children, Rehana had no children from him and lived alone at the New Jaffrabad house. He would visit her occasionally. Locals told the police that she was a sociable person and had friendly relations with her neighbours.

“Her relatives told us that Haji Aleem is presently on a pilgrimage to Mecca. They have alleged that some cash kept in the house is missing,” said a police officer.

The victim’s relatives claimed that Rs. 20 lakh in cash was kept at the house. The police have registered a murder case and initiated investigations.

‘Assailants known’

“We are investigating the case from all angles. Preliminary findings indicate that the assailants, who knew Rehana, attacked her from behind. They stabbed her in the back and slit her throat. The post-mortem report will establish the exact nature of injuries and the timing of death. A list of all those who frequented her residence is being prepared. Her in-laws will be questioned in this regard,” said the officer.

The murder weapon has not been found yet. The police have also contacted the victim’s parents, residents of Rajgarh Colony in Gandhi Nagar, to record their statements.

“Investigations have revealed that Rehana’s husband was earlier booked in some criminal cases. These facts are being taken into account while probing the case,” the officer added.
