The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday staged a protest against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti, who is booked in a domestic violence case on the basis of a complaint filed by his wife Lipika Mitra. The protest which was staged near Mr Bharti's residence in Malviya Nagar was led by former Mayor of Municipal Corporation of Delhi and BJP leader Arti Mehra.

In her address to the participants of the march, Ms Mehra alleged that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was “simply paying lip service” through his tweets on an “extremely serious issue”. “It’s a case of alleged violence against a woman, who happens to by Mr. Bharti’s wife. How can Mr. Kejriwal not take some strong actions against his former law minister?” she questioned.

She further said that the residents of Malviya Nagar have been duped by the likes of Mr. Bharti and Mr. Kejriwal, “who failed to fulfil any of the promises that he had made during his election campaign.” Ms. Mehra also added that she plans to meet the Chief Minister “very soon” to ask him how Delhi government is planning to control dengue in the Malviya Nagar constituency, where a nine-year-old girl died on Friday.

“Kejriwal, who spoke so much about appointing an internal Lokpal, has pushed the issue under the carpet after coming to power. It is a poor reflection on the ethics of AAP that ironically calls itself as the party that honours moral values in politics,” Ms. Mehra said.

The member of BJP’s national executive also said that the absconding MLA, Mr Bharti, is a habitual harasser of women as he had broken the law earlier as well by entering a Nigerian woman’s house at mid night in Khirki Extension of Malviya Nagar.

The locals present in the march also expressed their anger on the death of a young girl due to dengue and claimed that the Delhi government is still not taking enough measures to control the epidemic. Several protesters, who participated in the non-violent protest, courted arrest.

A Delhi court had issued a warrant against Bharti in a domestic violence and attempt to murder case filed by his wife Ms. Lipika. The court had earlier refused to grant anticipatory bail to the AAP MLA.
