Battered baby dead

March 16, 2012 02:06 am | Updated December 04, 2021 11:42 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

After battling for life for nearly two months, the battered baby girl, who was being treated at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences Trauma Centre died of cardiac arrest on Thursday, confirmed doctors here.

“She was declared dead after a massive cardiac arrest at 9.40 p.m. The reasons that triggered the cardiac arrest are still not known,” said Trauma Centre associate professor Dr. Deepak Aggarwal. A post mortem will be conducted on Friday, he added.

The baby had shown rapid signs of recovery and had begun responding to treatment early this month. She was hailed as the “miracle baby” by doctors after she managed to stay off ventilator support for several days.

On Thursday, she developed some complications. “She was doing all right, but there was some variation in her heart rate today [Thursday]. The medical staff was monitoring her condition since then,” said Dr. Aggarwal.

“We suspect that after having gone through two cardiac arrests earlier, the child's heart must have become weak. She succumbed to the cardiac arrest today (Thursday),” added the doctor.

The baby girl was brought to AIIMS by a teenage girl on January 18. The baby was admitted to the Trauma Centre with severe head injuries, fractured arms and bite marks all over her body. She underwent five life-saving surgeries and doctors were uncertain about the quality of life she would have been able to lead after being discharged.
