The brutal gang-rape of the 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a moving bus on December 16, 2012, shook the entire nation. The despicable act led a group of 52 artists to create works of art paying homage to the young girl.
The ongoing exhibition of paintings, drawings, photographs and graphics at the Dhoomimal Gallery here makes an attempt to capture the girl’s brave struggle to survive and the aftermath of the incident.
Eventually, she lost her life, but continues to live in the hearts and minds of millions of Indians.
Artists like Paresh Maity, Arpana Caur, Gopi Gajwani, Ved Nayar and Nupur Kundu have expressed their voice to speak out against such incidents and the need for society to provide succour to victims.

According to curator Subbanna, December 16, 2012, was a day most Indians can never forget.
Pointing out that the incident brought immense shame to the nation, Subbanna said it united everyone to fight and pray for this girl.
“For this exhibition, we selected leading artists specialising in different art forms whose sensitivity is reflected in their work.”
Subbanna, who has produced two works, has highlighted ecological degradation and compared them with outraging the modesty of a woman.
The exhibition will conclude on May 25.
