East Delhi residents and visitors will have to wait till Monday to take a stench-free breath. Around 20,000 tonnes of garbage had accumulated on the streets over the past 10 days as East Delhi Municipal Corporation sanitation staff struck work, demanding their pending wages. With the strike being called off on Friday evening, garbage was cleared all night and day.
EDMC Additional Commissioner Pawan Sharma said: “We have removed around 6,000 tonnes of garbage as of Saturday night with our trucks making 1,000 trips. We should have the dhalaos cleared by Monday morning.”
While sanitation staff worked in three shifts and officials were out on the streets to check the progress, the 302 auto-tippers of the EDMC will only start work in full-swing on Monday.

On Saturday, the duststorm and rain added to the residents’ woes as garbage flew around and was strewn over a wide area.
