AAP slams BJP, Cong over 1984 riots

Says they were saving the accused because their own people were involved

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday alleged that the BJP and the Congress were saving the accused of the 1984 Sikh riots because their own people were involved in the massacre.

AAP’s Rajya Sabha-elect Sanjay Singh said that the Sikh riots are among the darkest chapters in the history of Delhi. However, the Congress and the BJP governments have only tried to save those accused in the violence. “The only hope we now have is from the honourable Supreme Court to give the victims and their families justice,” he said.

He said that it was a matter of shame that for over 30 years the BJP and the Congress governments have only tried to protect, while the AAP government had in its 49-day term called for an unbiased investigation by setting up a special investigation team (SIT).

The AAP leader said that after the party’s short term in power there was no work done by the SIT.

In fact, till May 2014, when the Congress was in power at the Centre, Mr. Singh said, it was still understandable that the probe was on hold because the massacre was allegedly carried out by their party members, but even the coming of the BJP has also not changed things much.

“When we were elected back in power in 2015, the Narendra Modi government, in a panic, formed an SIT fearing that Arvind Kejriwal would call for an unbiased probe to nail the accused,” he said.

The AAP alleged that the SIT formed by the Centre has closed 190 out of the 290 cases that they were investigating, which they allegedly means that the government only wanted to protect the Congress leaders involved in provoking violence.
