The Delhi High Court on Monday extended the anticipatory bail (till October 5) granted earlier to Aam Aadmi Party MLA Jarnail Singh in a case of alleged assault on an MCD engineer in Krishna Park area of West Delhi.

The engineer had accused Mr. Singh of leading a crowd of local residents to attack him when he tried to demolish an illegal construction.

The engineer alleged that the AAP leader, along with others, not only prevented the Municipal Corporation team from carrying out the demolition, but even assaulted him in public and tore up the papers of clearance when they were shown to him. Subsequently, he registered an FIR against Mr. Singh at Tilak Nagar police station.

Justice Indermeet Kaur of the High Court extended the relief, which was initially granted to Mr. Singh on May 18 and later extended. Singh represents Tilak Nagar constituency in Delhi Assembly. The trial court had earlier refused him anticipatory bail.

The Delhi Assembly had referred the case of alleged harassment of Mr. Singh by the Delhi Police to the Privileges Committee of the House. Police had declared Mr. Singh an absconder after booking him on the complaint of assault.

Mr. Singh said in the Assembly that even though he was present in the city, the police had declared him an absconder.
