A year after his death, family of Amity student demands CBI probe

Udit’s body was found near the hostel on campus

A year after a 19-year-old first-year B.Tech student of Amity University died under mysterious circumstances, Udit Shankar’s family protested outside the varsity on Friday demanding a CBI probe.

Udit died due to a head injury and his body, which had a few injury marks, was found near the hostel on November 24, 2016. He lived on the fourth floor of hostel no 3 on campus. The university officials had rushed him to Kailash Hospital in Sector 27, where he was declared brought dead. Udit’s father Uma Shankar, a retired Navy official, alleged that his son was murdered.

“We were initially told that Udit had committed suicide but circumstances did not corroborate the police theory. He was a cheerful boy and there was no sign to indicate that he was suicidal. We suspect he was pushed from the fourth floor of the hostel,” he said.

Mr. Shankar alleged that the police registered a case of death due to negligence but did not question the suspects properly. “The university management and police concealed important information and evidence, leading to shoddy probe with no conclusion in one year,” he said.

Udit’s family had met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on June 16 and demanded a CBI probe. Senior Superintendent of Police Love Kumar said matter was transferred to the Crime Branch. The police had questioned three suspects but failed to get concrete clues. The matter is still under investigation.

Mr. Shankar said the family will move a petition in the Supreme Court demanding a CBI probe. A university spokesperson said matter is under investigation and hence it won’t be possible to comment on the issue.
