A museum that reflects Delhi’s ethos is also on the cards

May 21, 2014 12:56 pm | Updated 12:56 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

From lesser-known monuments to the food of the Capital, a museum planned by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation will have a space for all things Delhi.

A part of the Town Hall’s redevelopment plan includes the museum. It is expected to house artefacts and audio-visual presentations on all cultural aspects of the city. It will include exhibits of textile, warfare, art, literature, jewellery and architecture.

The museum will have a timeline of the major events in Delhi’s history, with an interactive display using touch screens, projectors and models.

The convenor of INTACH’s Delhi chapter, A.G.K. Menon, said the museum will offer Delhiites as well as visitors a comprehensive look at the evolving culture of the city. For example, there are hundreds of smaller monuments scattered around the city that have their own stories, but not much is known about them.

“Everyone knows about Qutab Minar or Red Fort, but this museum will bring out the cultural significance of the whole of Delhi,” said Mr. Menon.

Apart from artefacts, the museum will also showcase “intangible heritage”, said Mr. Menon. “It will interpret all aspects of Delhi’s heritage, like the food and music. There will be an exhibit on the historic women of Delhi,” he added.

Though INTACH drafted the plan for the area’s redevelopment, the corporation is yet to engage a consultant for the project, so the final details are yet to be ironed out. But, if the blueprint is anything to go by, the museum could become a one-stop destination for Delhi’s heritage.
