The Delhi High Court is seized of two cases against former Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar, alleging that he had obtained his enrolment as a lawyer on the basis of a fake law degree and seeking cancellation of his election from the Tri Nagar constituency in this year’s Delhi Assembly polls.
In another case, Mr. Tomar moved the High Court last month seeking stay on the proceedings initiated by the Bar Council of Delhi over his graduation and law degrees and other certificates, which he had submitted for getting enrolled as an advocate.
As the matters are sub judice, Justice Rajiv Shakdher recently appointed lawyer Chandrashekhar Singh as amicus curiae to assist the court in determining if Mr. Tomar’s certificates are genuine.

The court is yet to decide on the authenticity of Mr. Tomar’s degrees.
The High Court has issued notices to Mr. Tomar and the Election Commission on a petition moved by BJP leader Nand Kishore Garg seeking setting aside of his election over wrong declaration of educational qualifications in his nomination papers. Mr. Garg had contested the Assembly polls against Mr. Tomar.

The court has also asked the Election Commission to preserve the documents filed by the ex-Minister.
In his petition against the Bar Council of Delhi’s proceedings, Mr. Tomar alleged that it had not provided him a copy of the inquiry report against him and had instead forwarded it to the Delhi Police.
Mr. Tomar claimed that he had completed his law degree from Bishwanath Singh Institute of Legal Studies, Munger, and apprised the court of an affidavit filed by the college admitting to this fact. However, Tilak Manjhi Bhagalpur University of Bihar told the High Court that Mr. Tomar’s law degree was fabricated and did not exist in its records. The court directed the Bar Council of Delhi, which has already issued notice to Mr. Tomar, to probe the matter expeditiously and submit its report as soon as possible.
