A Delhi couple that committed suicide in Mathura on Wednesday have purportedly left behind a suicide note blaming several senior officers of the Central Home Department and Sandeep Mittal, DIG Police, for forcing them to take the extreme step following misappropriation of funds worth several crores of rupees.
It is, however, learnt that Sankalp Anand – a lecturer at the Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science – who along with his wife Naresh Nandini Anand died after jumping in front of a speeding train in Mathura – allegedly had a controversial past himself.
An internal probe had established that the deceased was a habitual absentee and would skip work on medical grounds. This resulted in his superiors referring him to a medical board at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital this August. However, despite repeated reminders he did not send his medical records to the doctors, said sources.

A source also added that despite the deceased not being a cheque drawing officer, the institute had received several bounced cheques, some of which were purportedly issued by Naresh. “Not only the amounts in these cheques were whopping, some as high as Rs.13 crore, some accounts mentioned in the cheques did not even exist,” said the source.
Contesting the claim in Sankalp’s suicide pact that he was told to execute a construction project worth Rs.250 crore by his colleagues at the institute, the source said that the institute itself cannot issue a work order for any construction activity.
The unusually high number of visitors coming to meet Sankalp at the institute had also raised a few eyebrows. In a span of six months, he had 600 visitors and some, it is learnt, visited without any authorisation.

The inquiry also revealed that Sankalp had not intimated his office about his marriage and had even not disclosed his present address.
The couple was cremated at the Lodhi Crematorium here on Thursday morning in the presence of grieving family members including Sankalp’s father, noted lyricist Santosh Anand. Family and relatives said the deceased couple “looked happy and content” and had never shared anything that was worrying them.
