MCD to stop salary of defaulting staff

December 19, 2009 07:56 pm | Updated 07:56 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to act tough with employees who have not been forthcoming in registering themselves with its biometric system of attendance.

Acting on an earlier circular issued by the MCD informing employees of its decision to stop payment of salaries to those who have not registered with the system, the civic body has decided to stop salaries of a large number of safai karamcharis.

According to MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur, these employees mostly comprise substitute safai karamcharis. “These workers report about three to four times a month to fill in for regular safai karamcharis. Salaries of about 20,000 such substitute safai karamcharis who have not got enrolled in the system will not be released. Those who have not registered themselves under the biometric system could still do so as the registration process is still on. Our idea is to encourage them to co-operate with us by coming forward and falling in line with the biometric system.”

Recently, the civic body had set up a fact-finding committee to look into irregularities connected with the biometric system and the report had revealed 22,853 “missing” employees. The committee is still verifying a number of bank accounts of its employees to find out further details.

The civic agency had earlier admitted to incurring a loss of Rs.204 crore due to these “missing” employees.
