Khattar lauds ‘Karnataka’s Sindhu’

: The name P.V. Sindhu became unforgettable for most Indians after the 21-year-old badminton player won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics last week.

But Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had trouble recalling the shuttler's name and ended up getting her home State wrong as he spoke about her achievement.

Mr. Khattar was speaking at an event in Bahadurgarh where he felicitated India's other Olympic medallist, wrestler Sakshi Malik.

While congratulating both, he said: “It is a happy occasion that for Rakshabandhan two daughters of the country have given us this gift. One of them is Haryana’s daughter Sakshi Malik and the other, Karnataka’s Sindhu.”

Mr. Khattar then turned back and asked an aide “what name” and was told the silver medallist’s full name.

“Yes, P.V. Sindhu,” he told the crowd.

Ironically, Mr. Khattar had recently honoured Ms. Sindhu by announcing Rs.50 lakh cash prize for her.
