HC upset over Bar election posters in district court

The “defacement” of the walls of the Tis Hazari court complex due to posters put up by advocates and vendors for the upcoming Bar elections there, has earned the Delhi High Court’s disapproval, which directed the district and sessions judge to remove the posters.

“I don’t know why advocates behave like this,” said Justice B. D. Ahmed, when told how advocates had gone about putting up campaign posters everywhere before the elections to the Delhi Bar Association on January 20.

The court also directed the three-member election panel, which is constituted to conduct the polls, to ensure that no posters are put up on the court building.

The court also directed the District Judge to also take action under the Public Property Defacement Act.

“It was noted in an earlier order that it was the prime responsibility of the Bar Association that no posters should be pasted on the building of the court complex,” the Bench said.

The High Court also took note of the fact that despite its orders, the Bar Association had not incorporated an election rule wherein putting up posters in the court complex could lead to disqualification from contesting the elections.
