Cyclists in the Capital have been told to “Be Visible” with the launch of a joint campaign between the Delhi Traffic Police and the International Road Federation (IRF) to ensure road safety and prevent accidents since cyclists are the most vulnerable road users after pedestrians. The campaign will involve installing retro-reflective tapes on 7,500 bicycles free-of-cost during the ongoing 24 Road Safety Week observed here.
“Installation of retro-reflective tapes on bicycles will help make bicycles a safer mode of transportation on various busy roads, particularly during late hours. The campaign is being carried out in three areas of Delhi including Khan Pur T Point, Lal Kuan, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road and Shastri Park, Pushta Road, Trans Yamuna,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg.
The IRF has been urging the Government, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and industry for making installation of retro-reflective tapes on bicycles mandatory,” said IRF Chairman K.K. Kapila. “BIS has already done technical evaluation and a final decision is pending for a long time,” he said.
