BJP demands withdrawal of CNG price hike

June 17, 2010 08:05 pm | Updated November 28, 2021 08:57 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Terming the hike in CNG prices a “diabolic move” against the people, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly V. K. Malhotra has demanded a rollback of the price rise.

This was the sixth increase in CNG prices in the past four years and the third in the past three months, noted Prof. Malhotra in a statement on Thursday.

“The increase in CNG prices will not only affect transportation costs but it will also impact all items of daily use,” he said. “A population that is tormented by skyrocketing prices will now face more inflation than ever before.”

Prof. Malhotra reminded that CNG was introduced for commercial vehicles by the State to control pollution. He said the Government had forgotten its own promise to transporters that the expenses undertaken in buying CNG kits would be neutralised by supplying CNG at subsidised rates.

The BJP leader said the spate of hikes would burden transporters and spike up travel and transportation costs within the city. He said the BJP was opposed to the current hike in CNG prices as also the Union Government proposal to increase petrol, diesel and cooking gas prices.

Prof. Malhotra urged the Prime Minister and the Delhi Chief Minister to withdraw the CNG hike.
