: After numerous complaints of being fleeced by app-based cab companies through surge pricing, the Delhi government on Monday issued a stern warning to taxi aggregators such as Ola and Uber to fall in line.

The Transport Department set-up a helpline number — 011-42 400 400 — for complaints related to surge pricing even as sources said efforts were on to check overcharging “immediately”.

A source close to Transport Minister Gopal Rai said the government was in the process of evolving a mechanism for immediate re-dressal of complaints related to overcharging despite Ola and Uber having announced a suspension of surge pricing till the end of April in Delhi.

The source said the government would continue to make a list of overcharging by cabs, which would be compiled and despatched to the company concerned for disciplinary action. It will also consider suspension of permits and the impounding of vehicles in such cases.

“My friends and I decided to carpool to work. We waited for a cab for two hours before being told that surge pricing would mean three times the normal rate; which meant that we would be paying Rs. 300 per head, instead of Rs. 300 for the total trip. We had to work from home,” said Shikhar Arora, a private executive.
