8 arrested as fake call centre busted in Delhi

They used to pose as members of Amazon technical support team

Eight persons were arrested for allegedly running a fake international call centre in southeast Delhi’s Jamia Nagar, the police said on Monday.

DCP (South-East) Esha Pandey said they received information about a fake call centre being operated at Okhla Vihar in Jamia Nagar. A police team raided at the said location where they found six persons talking to foreigners on their phones. After seeing the police, the accused tried to escape but were intercepted by the police and eventually arrested.

The DCP said that during interrogation, all the accused persons revealed that they used to pose as members of the technical support team of Amazon. They also had a virtual toll free numbers displayed on top of their ad page. On pretext of providing technical help, the accused persons told the victims to download a fake anti-virus for which they received a payment through a gift card.

In the investigation conducted so far, around ₹35 lakh have been recovered from the accused persons, the DCP said.
