3 jailed in robbery case

₹7,000 fine imposed on each convict

Observing that the rights of a victim are on par with those of an accused at the time of award of punishment, a Delhi court has sentenced a man to seven years’ imprisonment and awarded five years’ in jail each to two persons in a robbery case.

Additional Sessions Judge Sukhvinder Kaur at the Rohini courts awarded seven years’ jail term to convict Naresh and five years’ imprisonment each to Pradeep and Gaurav, saying they do not deserve any leniency.

‘Don’t deserve leniency’

The court also imposed a fine of ₹7,000 each on them. The police had charged them with robbing two persons at knife point.

“The court must not only keep in view the rights of the criminal but also the rights of the victim of the crime and society at large while considering the imposition of appropriate punishment. The convicts had committed two robberies on the same night at knife point resulting in injuries to the victims. I am of the considered view that the convicts do not deserve any leniency,” Additional Sessions Judge said while sentencing them.

The court relied on the testimonies of the victims, saying that they remained unequivocal, unambiguous and unchallenged.

According to the prosecution, the accused had robbed Saurabh and Hritvik of their mobile phones, money and a wristwatch in December 2012. When the victims resisted, the convicts assaulted them. One of them stabbed Saurabh in the abdomen.

The convicts were nabbed by the public after the victims raised an alarm and handed over to the police.
