Bought weapon for celebratory firing

The accused Ajay (22) and Shiv (19) were arrested in the small hours of Wednesday in Dwarka’s Baba Haridas Nagar.

Two students were arrested on Wednesday in Dwarka for allegedly possessing an illegal revolver, which they had procured from a person who is currently in judicial custody, the police said on Thursday.

The accused allegedly wanted to use the weapon for celebratory firing at their nephew’s birth ceremony, they added.

Ajay (22), is pursuing Bachelors of Arts from Open School, and Shiv (19), a student of an Industrial Training Institute, were arrested in the small hours of Wednesday in Dwarka’s Baba Haridas Nagar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Shibesh Singh said.

Officers patrolling the area near a government school spotted the youths on a motorcycle, Mr. Singh said.

“As soon as they spotted the police, they duo tried to flee. However, they were chased and apprehended. A search led to seizure of a countrymade revolver and five live cartridges,” he said.

Failed to give licence

They were unable to produce the revolver’s licence, the officer added.

During interrogation, the duo allegedly told the police that they had procured the weapon for celebratory firing during the birth ceremony of Ajay’s nephew on Friday.

The police also claimed that the duo had procured the weapon from Vikram, who was arrested a few weeks ago under Arms Act.

“Vikram used to charge a certain amount from people to pose with a revolver. The duo had bought the revolver about two months ago,” Mr. Singh added.
