Ahead of US President Barack Obama’s visit to the Capital on Republic Day, the Delhi Police Special Cell has seized 1,020 live cartridges at Welcome metro station in East Delhi. With the seizure, the Special Cell claims to have busted an inter-State gang dealing in illegal arms and ammunitions. No possible terror angle has been revealed so far.
“Three persons have been arrested from Welcome metro station and the team has recovered 1,020 live cartridges of mainly 9 mm and 7.65 mm,” said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Cell.
“We received a specific input that a large consignment of illegal ammunition will be supplied near the metro station on Wednesday. Based on the information, a trap was laid and the three were arrested. They were later identified as Mohammad Sharik (42), Faeeem Miya (45), and Mohammad Imran (32),” said Mr. Yadav. During interrogation, the accused told the police that they used to procure ammunition from Sitapur and sold them to criminals in Delhi and NCR region.

“The interrogation so far has not revealed any terror links, but the police are probing all angles,” Mr. Yadav said.
Around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, a Maruti EECO car bearing registration no. UP81AH-1011 came to the station from the Seelampur side. Two persons in the car - Sharik and Faeeem - were apprehended and illegal ammunitions were seized from them. The duo revealed that they procured illegal ammunitions from Imran, a resident of Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh. Imran was arrested on Thursday near Punjabi Dhaba in Sitapur and further 100 live cartridges of 7.65 mm were seized from him .
It was learnt that all the arrested persons were involved in cases of murder, robbery, and attempt to murder .
