Labourers at a construction site in Sector 70A here went on the rampage on Wednesday after a scaffolding came crashing down, killing a labourer and injuring three others.

They allegedly vandalised the developer’s office and damaged a car. A case on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered.

The police have registered a case against the managers and site incharge of developer AIPL, and contractor RSV at Badshahpur police station, but no arrests have been made so far.
Four labourers were working on the 17th floor of an under-construction project when the scaffolding crashed around 10 a.m. While Tanjum Ahmed, a resident of West Bengal, died on the spot, Liyakat Ansari, Rakesh and Hussain sustained grievous injuries and were admitted to a hospital.
The workers went on the rampage following the incident and accused the contractor and developer of not adhering to safety norms. The agitated workers vandalised the marketing office at the construction site and threw flowerpots on a car parked at there. The police were called in to bring the situation under control.

A senior official from the construction company said, “It was a mere accident. There was no negligence on the part of the company, contractor and the labourers.”
He added that construction work on fourth and 17th floors of the building was on for the past 20 days. Stating that the matter will be investigated, the official said a nut holding the scaffolding together probably gave way, leading to the crash. He reiterated that all safety norms were adhered to at the construction site.
In July, over 3,000 labourers at DLF’s construction site on Golf Course Road had gone on the rampage, vandalised its office and threw stones in protest against poor working conditions, lack of transport and inadequate health facilities. The rampaging workers vandalised the office of the contractor and the engineers. The staff allegedly locked themselves inside rooms to escape the mob.
