Woman killed in road accident: constable held

The police said that Regina Begum of Anna Colony, Kuniyamuthur, was working as a clerk in a private bank.

A. Ashok Kumar, a police constable, was arrested on Thursday on the charge of fatally knocking down S. Regina Begum (23) near Nirmala College for Women here.

Ashok Kumar was driving a vehicle owned by the father of R.V. Ramya Bharathi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) when the accident occurred.

The police said that Regina Begum of Anna Colony, Kuniyamuthur, was working as a clerk in a private bank. She was on her way to work on her two-wheeler.

When she tried to avoid a pit on the road near the burial ground a few meters away from the Sungam traffic signal, the vehicle driven by Ashok Kumar hit her two-wheeler from behind. In the impact, the two-wheeler was thrown off into a nearby drain. She was declared brought dead at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The body was handed over to her family members after a post-mortem examination.

Ashok Kumar was recruited in 2010 batch and was attached to the Motor Transport section of the Armed Reserve Police. He was booked under sections 304(A) (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving on a public way) of the Indian Penal Code.

City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan said that Ashok Kumar has been placed under suspension. Further inquiries were under way. Later, a court granted him bail. The vehicle has been seized.
