At a time when the works on the second entry at the Old Suramangalam side of Salem Railway Junction are progressing fast, the stagnation of rain water at the entrance leading to the escalator and also at the two-wheeler parking lot opposite the main portico is causing hardship to the commuters.
The Salem city and other parts of the district have been experiencing widespread rainfall for the past few days.
The rain water stagnation is a usual phenomenon at the entrance leading to the escalator and lift situated on platform No. 1 of Salem Railway Junction.

The escalator and lift are immensely beneficial to the senior citizens, sick, women and differently abled to reach other platforms. The escalator has been commissioned on platform No. 1 in such a way that the people arriving in cars, autos two-wheelers could easily reach very near the facility through the entrance.
However, due to the uneven surface at the entrance rain water stagnates even when it drizzles, due to which the people have to wade through the water to reach the platform No 1. The vehicles have to be parked on the main road and the people have to use the front portions of the shops in the shopping complex to reach platform No. 1, the escalator and lift.
Similarly, the stagnation of water near the two-wheeler parking opposite the main portico is also causing hindrance. A cross section of the commuters have urged the Salem Railway Junction authorities to elevate surface of the entrance near the escalator to avoid water stagnation.

The people also complain that the escalator on many days is out of order, forcing them to take the subway or the foot over-bridge. The authorities should ensure that escalator functions properly particularly during the peak hours.
