Following opposition from the traders, commercial establishments and residents in Bhavani Town for laying pipelines for the Dedicated Water Supply Scheme (DWSS) through the town, Collector S. Prabhakar has asked officials to work out the cost for laying pipelines along an alternative route.

The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board is implementing the ₹ 484.45 crore scheme to supply 81.10 million litres per day (MLD) from Uratchikottai village in Bhavani Town to the Erode City Municipal Corporation.

Water will be drawn from the River Cauvery and processed at the water treatment plant and pumped to tanks in the city through 22 km feeder line from Uratchikottai to Erode.

The feeder line is to pass through the Bhavani Town for which there is a strong opposition from the people and traders.

On Monday, members of all traders and public welfare committees of Bhavani submitted petition to the Collector during the grievances redress meeting.

They said that pipelines are proposed to be laid through important roads in the town which will affect traders and the public at a large.

Digging of the roads will cause extensive damage to houses and also the existing water pipelines.

It will result in disconnection of water supply to the entire town, they added. The petition said that works are expected to be carried out for three months and students will be most affected.

Hence, they urge the administration to find an alternative way for laying pipelines so that roads in the town are not dug. They also wanted water to be supplied to the Bhavani Municipality from the new scheme.

Mr. Prabhakar asked TWAD Board officials to find an alternative route for laying pipelines and also workout the additional cost for it.

He said that after obtaining the report, a decision would be taken.
