Villagers demand closure of liquor outlet

Residents of Palanigoundenpudur staged a protest on Wednesday morning by preventing the opening of a liquor outlet in the area.

The residents said that the village, which has 2,000 people, was troubled by the presence of the shop, which attracted customers from neighbouring villages as well. The visitors teased the women residents. To restore peace, the residents said that they wanted the shop to be closed and shifted out of the village.

On hearing about the protest, Pollachi Taluk Police rushed to the spot, pacified the agitators and promised action at the earliest.

Alandurai Police have arrested 10 people after they clashed on Tuesday evening.

The police said that the trouble broke out when Kathirvel, 24, a member of one of the two groups went to buy liquor in Narasipuram. There, he dropped his bottle when a member of the other group, Nathan, accidentally fell on him.

This led to a verbal duel and resulted in Nathan’s group thrashing Kathirvel.

Soon thereafter, Kathirvel’s group assaulted Nathan’s group. Based on complaints from both the groups, the police registered two cases and arrested 10 people from both the groups.

Arrested

Singanallur Police have arrested Rangarajan, 30, of Karur, on charges of picking pockets. The police said that Rangarajan was caught red-handed from a moving bus on Kamarajar Road.
