Residents undertaking a fast in Coimbatore.

Nine residents of Vellalore went on an indefinite fast on Sunday morning demanding the shifting of the Coimbatore Corporation’s compost yard. According to sources, the residents – Daniel, Murali, Varadharaj, Moorthy, Anand, Sakthivel, Amarnath, Vellingiri and Chandran – began their fast at 10 a.m. Sunday. But a few hours later, Murali, Varadharaj, Vellingiri and Chandran gave up their fast as they fell sick and felt uncomfortable, said Mr. Daniel.

A little later, the Podanur Police descended on the spot, removed the protestors and took them to a nearby wedding hall, where they were kept till evening. Mr. Daniel said that Police had arrested them but were yet to register a case. Mr. Daniel and Mr. Anand had staged a fast on July 8 but were forced to give up as the Police requested them to do so keeping in mind the law and order situation. Mr. Daniel said that the protest was also against Mayor S.M. Velusamy, who had ruled out shifting the dump yard from Vellalore.
