Vehicles set on fire at Mettupalayam

Vehicles gutted at various places in Mettupalayam on Sunday night.

Tension prevailed at Mettupalayam on Monday after unidentified persons had set fire to a number of vehicles parked at workshops and in front of houses.

People noticed fire raging from a workshop, near Dhimma Mastry Lane. An autorickshaw, several engines, batteries, and a moped were gutted. Two motorcycles, and two mopeds were set on fire near Odanthurai.

Temples burgled

Unidentified persons broke into three temples at Poosaripalayam and decamped with money, jewellery, and offerings in the temple hundis.

The police said that the burglary occurred on Sunday night.

Case against three

The police have registered a case of attempting suicide under section 309 of Indian Penal Code against three members of a family. On Sunday Jayasri (48), wife of Rajendra Prasad, and her sons Kumaran (31) and Swaminthan (29), threatened to commit suicide by jumping off the third floor of a building on RG Street.

Gambling: 12 held

The police have arrested 12 people from Singanallur and Saravanampatty and have seized over Rs6,000 used for gambling.

Rescued from well

M. Marimuthu (31), who fell into a 100ft deep well, near Malumichampatty, on Sunday evening was rescued on Monday. after a night long stay inside the dry well. The daily wage earner was living with his wife and two children.

Marimuthu told the police that he failed to take notice of the well while he was walking back home.

His calls for help went unheard in the night. In the morning a few passers heard his cries and informed the police. Probe is on to know whether he entered the well to steal a motor pump.

Two held

The police on Sunday arrested Mohammed Rafiq (32) of Bismi Nagar, and Abdul Lathif (36) of Saramedu — Tippu Nagar, on charges of inciting communal animosity, unlawful assembly, preventing a government servant from discharging duty, and attempt to murder. The police said that they stopped a group of persons from distributing handbills flaying BJP at Sundarapuram.

The persons attempted to murder Sub-Inspector of Police Gnanasekaran.

The Popular Front of India on Monday petitioned the District Collector stating that the police behaved in a partisan and biased manner taking sides with Hindu organisations.

The police were foisting false cases against its cadre who resorted to democratic forms of agitation.
