The Social Awareness Movement has asked the district administration to take criminal action against government officials who failed to >close down unauthorised children’s homes .
Two minor girls who were raped last week at Pollachi were residing at a children’s home that was running for over two decades without having obtained any registration or approval.
In a petition submitted to District Collector Archana Patnaik during the public grievances redress meeting held at the Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday, the organisation’s president J.D. Socrates said that the organisation had submitted petitions in 2011 and 2012. No action was taken.

He said that 50 students of a children’s home were hospitalised following food poisoning in 2013.
School Students of Government Adi Dravidar Welfare Higher Secondary School at Thondamuthur asked the district administration to act against the school officials who had closed chemistry and computer science laboratories following a dispute between teachers.
In a petition, they said that there were 60 students studying Plus-Two in the school, none of whom were able to use these laboratories in last two weeks.

Child labourers M. Arumugam, MLA, asked the district administration, the police, and the Labour Department to act against textile mills in rural areas of Coimbatore that were employing children as labourers.
In a petition, the CPI leader said that a 14-year-old girl employed in a mill had run away last week and was rescued by local residents. She was allegedly assaulted by her employers. He urged the authorities to investigate the functioning of all the mills in the district.
