May 25, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:47 am IST - COIMBATORE:

The city police on Monday detected four chain snatching cases with the arrest of a duo who committed them, over the last four months.

The accused were identified as S. Suresh alias Chakravarthi and P. Shankar alias Shankaralingam. The two were serial offenders who already had four cases against them in the city, Erode and Tirupur.

The cases include robbery from M. Valliammal (62) of Kothari Nagar, near Singanallur, earlier this month. The duo pretending to be campaigners asked water from the woman who lived alone in the house and in moments after she stepped in they forced her to remove the chain and fled the place.

According to Inspector Salairam Sakthivel, whose team arrested the accused, the mode of chain snatching of the accused was different in all the four offences.

The police said that Suresh and Shankar were picked close to a Tasmac outlet near Singanallur Bus Stand, based on a tip-off.

During inquiry, they reportedly admitted that they snatched chains from four women in separate incidents at Singanallur and nearby places. The accused were also identified by the victims.

Fourteen sovereigns gold jewellery they snatched from victims was recovered and the two-wheeler they used was also seized.

The two were booked under Section 392 (punishment for robbery) of the Indian Penal Code, arrested and lodged in jail under judicial custody on Monday.
