Trade unions take out rallies to mark May Day

Rallies and flag hoisting events organised by various trade unions marked May Day in the city on Friday. The members of the Anna Trade Union and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) took out a procession from Red Cross Building to Hotel Tamil Nadu.

More than 1,200 cadre took part in the rally that was led by Mayor of Coimbatore Corporation P. Rajkumar and AIADMK leader Nanjil Sampath. Present and former MLAs and other elected representatives took part in the rally.

About 600 cadre attached to the New Democratic Labour Front took out a rally from the Power House at Tatabad to Sivananda Colony. The rally ended with a public meeting. In the evening, labourers attached to Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) took out a procession from Flower market to Ther Nilai Thidal.

Flag hoisting was organised by trade unions at more than 25 places in the city, while road side meetings were also organised by a few trade unions.

Similar rallies and flag hoisting events were organised by autorickshaw drivers and trade unions at Pollachi, Mettupalayam and other industrial pockets at the outskirts of the city.
