The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) will soon take up works for Rs. 450 crore to modernise the power distribution infrastructure in Coimbatore, Tirupur and the Nilgiris districts.
According to the Tangedco chief engineer, A. Thangavelu, the Union Government has sanctioned funds to 110 cities, including Coimbatore, in the State under the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme. All the works taken up under the project here will be completed by June next year.
In order to avoid delays, a meeting of the officials from different departments (including the Highways, local bodies and the police) was held here recently in the presence of District Collector M. Karunagaran.

Taking electricity cables underground will be done in select areas of Coimbatore city, covering about 100 km. It was already done in a few places in 2010. Apart from the underground cable works, pole mounted distribution transformers of small capacities will be installed in a few places, new distribution and transmission systems will be added, and SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems will be installed in Tirupur and Coimbatore. Each SCADA system will be connected to 13 to 15 sub-stations and the data in all the sub-stations can be taken from one place.
A ring main unit (which will help identify faults in the lines easily) will be installed in one location. It will need space and the Tangedco has already identified the location to install the system. Works amounting to Rs. 320 crore would be taken up in Coimbatore city and the rest will be for different parts of the three districts.
The entire project will not require land acquisition.

Mr. Thangavelu said that the project was sanctioned a couple of years ago and it was gaining momentum now. The works would be entrusted to contractors and they would ensure completing the project on time.
