The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) plans to add sub-stations in another 11 locations in the city to improve electricity distribution network.
T. Haldorai, chief engineer of Tangedco-Coimbatore region, told The Hindu that there are 11 sub-stations now and another 11 are planned. “If a sub-station achieves 70 % load, we need to go for another sub-station in that locality. If there is a breakdown, the additional sub-station will help meet the power requirements temporarily,” he said. “We are looking for land from other departments, Corporation and even private owners. We are giving more than the guideline value.” The 33/11 KV sub-stations will need about 50 cents each and 110 KV sub-stations will require one acre.
New sub-stations are planned at Central Prison area, MG Road, Velanampatti, GCT, Selvapuram, Nanjundapuram, Tidel Park, Chinniampalayam, Gandhimanagar, SITRA, and Ramnagar. For MG Road, the Tangedco has got a government land. It has identified land for Central Prison area and the Government has approved ₹30 crore for purchase of the land from the prison. However, it is yet to be handed over to Tangedco. In the case of Tidel Park, one acre is required, he said.

The entire district has 78 sub-stations. In the rural areas, Tangedco is able to get land for new sub-stations. In the city, the Tangedco officials have discussed with Ministers and District Collector and written to other departments too for land. Each sub-station will require ₹10 crore to ₹12 crore investment, apart from the land cost, Mr. Haldorai said.
