The district consultative committee on banking development is all set to roll out various initiatives with public participation for ensuring secured bank transactions.

Explaining the plans emerged out of the consultations held by bank officials, the Lead Bank’s Chief Manager S. Sundaramoorthy told The Hindu that security awareness programmes would be conducted at village-level to educate the rural people how to keep the passwords and PIN (personal identification number) safe without getting compromised.

With many programmes introduced to achieve financial inclusion, more and more people in rural areas in Tirupur district have opened bank accounts over the last few years and hold credit or debit cards.

“The number of bank accounts went up significantly in tandem with financial inclusion initiatives. But the financial literacy levels of customers left a lot to be desired in the district.

“Even after the customers are frequently cautioned, people are still falling prey to the fake calls asking for details of bank accounts or credit card, and also sometimes end up using unsecured web sites for online banking transactions”, pointed out a banking official.

Apart from this, the bankers also are going to strengthen the e-vigil at the ATMs and on the bank premises by improving the quality of CCTV cameras and assure that the security audits were carried out periodically.

Periodical training of guards at the ATMs and banks too are planned to bring banking sector under a safe net.
