Steady fall in Siruvani water supply

There has been a fall in the supply of Siruvani water in the past one month. As of October 27 (Tuesday) the Corporation had supplied only 58.60 million litres a day (MLD). On October 1 it had supplied a little over 63 MLD.

The maximum supply in recent months was on July 4, when the city received 93 MLD. The water level in the Siruvani Reservoir was at 36.41 feet against the full reservoir level of 49.54 feet

Water supply managers in the Coimbatore Corporation say that the though the water level on Tuesday was 29.75 feet, they supplied only around 58 MLD because they had to maintain the supply till the summer of 2016. The residents in the wards that receive Siruvani water , have not felt the impact, because the civic body has been making good the shortfall with water from the Pilloor reservoir.

The water managers say that they are diverting more than 20 MLD of Pilloor water to Siruvani-fed areas through tanks near Raja Street, Tatabad, Siddhapudur, VOC Park and Town Hall. But this diversion, coupled with leaks in the recent past, has affected areas where the Corporation supplies only Pilloor water. They say that soon after the Corporation shut down supply for a day around 10 days ago, there was a pipeline burst near Textool Bridge. The Corporation repaired the pipelines but soon after, the mainline that passed through Avarampalayam sprang another leak. The residents in wards coming under Central and East zones went without water for over 10 days.

The residents of seven or eight wards in the East Zone want the Corporation to link the main distribution line that comes from the new Pilloor storage reservoir in Ganapathy to the distribution pipelines in the areas.

Councillors of these wards say that all that is required is for the Corporation to place a ‘T’ joint to take water from the new main storage reservoir to overhead water tanks in Varadharajapuram and Anna Nagar. Once this is done, the Corporation can increase water supply to Masakalipalayam, Sowripalayam, Udayampalayam, Uppilipalayam, Varadharajapuram, Singanallur, Neelikonampalayam and Ondipudur.
