Representatives of various Central and State governments’ organisations, members of non-government organisations and trade bodies came together at the Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday evening to discuss a comprehensive mobility plan for Coimbatore.
According to sources, based on a presentation by ICRA Management Consultancy Services on the ground work they were carrying out, the representatives led by Collector Archana Patnaik discussed what should and could be done to improve vehicle movement and traffic condition in Coimbatore Corporation and Coimbatore Local Planning Authority areas.
The agency, engaged by the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited, would conduct a field-level survey to gather data that would help it formulate a solution. The centre of the survey would be the individual and not vehicles, as in most surveys, sources said.

After gathering the data, it would analyse the same, engage the stakeholders for consultation and then present it to the Government for schemes to be implemented and decisions to be taken to improve traffic in the city.
It could be ring roads, circular roads, flyovers, mass transit projects or anything that the government decided.
A press release from the Coimbatore Corporations said that the Mayor S.M. Velusamy spoke about the integrated bus stand, proposal to shift out the omni bus stand and flyovers at Gandhipuram and Ukkadam. The stakeholders sought a logistics hub outside the city and flyovers.
