Six arrested on robbery charge

The city police arrested six persons, including a taxi driver, for robbing 3.086 kg gold ingots and 4.5 kg silver bars from the employees of a leading jewellery outlet in the city on September 14.

In the late hours of that day the gang waylaid a taxi in which the valuables were transported, threatened the two employees using a toy gun and fled with the valuables.

Deputy Commissioner (Crime) of the city police R.V. Ramya Bharathi said that the eight special teams formed to investigate case quizzed more than 150 persons.

S. Alan (37) from Udayampalayam, who had earlier transported jewellery for the firm, went under hiding and police turned their attention on him.

During an inquiry with him police learnt about his association with K. Saravanakanth (36) from Munusamy Nagar near Ramanathapuram who was arrested earlier for various other cases.

Following the arrest of the two, other four were arrested during the late hours of Wednesday and wee hours of Thursday.

The other arrested persons were Saravanakanth’s accomplices T. Raja (34), U. Hariharan (25), Saravanakanth’s nephew P. Senthilnathan (31) and J. Benjamin Kirubakaran (23). They were lodged in jail under judicial custody on Thursday.

The police are on the lookout for Santhosh Kumar, who is said to be under hiding. Major share of the stolen valuables was recovered from them.
