A seven-month-old baby with pyloric atresia, a rare condition which causes obstruction in the passage linking the stomach and the intestine, underwent surgery at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital Limited (KMCH).
Dr. Naga Kumaran, consultant paediatric surgeon, carried out the surgery.
According to Dr. A. R. Srinivas, specialist in newborn care, the baby had multiple health issues including breathing problems which required respiratory support.

The baby, who weighed 1.4 kg, had also developed epidermolysis bullosa, a condition that affects skin and mucosal membranes.
According to Dr. Jeevan Kaumar, consultant dermatologist, only a few such cases were reported worldwide.

The obstruction at the outlet of the stomach was bypassed by joining stomach to the first part of the intestine. Dr. Dakshinamoorthy administered general anaesthesia.
A percutaneous central line was inserted for giving parenteral nutrition (providing nutrition through veins) to the baby. Dr. Naga carried out one more surgery as the child developed groin hernia.
According to Dr. Nalla G. Palaniaswami, chairman, KMCH, the disease occurred in only about one out of 10 lakh newborns.
