District Collector M. Karunagaran has asked the college heads in the engineering, medical and arts and science streams to set up anti-ragging committees to curb the ragging menace.
In a meeting with representatives from the police and institutions on Monday, the Collector said that the institutions had to send letters confirming the setting up of the committees to his office. The institutions should spread awareness about the evils of ragging and the punishment for indulging in it. Universities were asked to instruct affiliated colleges on anti-ragging measures.
Police were asked to register complaints even if they were sent via SMS. They were also told to watch out during hours when students came to college and returned home.

These activities had to be given focus because Coimbatore was filled with educational institutions, the Collector stressed.

An anti-ragging awareness meeting was held at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here after the new session began for the undergraduate courses.

S. Mahimairaja, Dean (Agriculture), said that the university was committed to maintaining a ragging-free campus.
S. Manoharan, Assistant Commissioner of Police, while urging the students to stay away from ragging, lamented that many cases of ragging did not get reported.
He also encouraged the students to approach the help of the police in case of need.
Meanwhile, City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan has announced that if ragging or even attempt to rag occurs in any of the colleges within the Coimbatore city police limits, students can inform copcbe@yahoo.com or could call the Commissioner at 94440-00029 or the control room at 100.
