Residents of Ramani Mayur Layout in Chinna Vedampatty finally have something to cheer about: after a long wait they have drinking water. Coimbatore Mayor S.M. Velusamy recently inaugurated water supply to the area, which has 750 houses.
North Zone chairman P. Rajkumar said that the residents were without water for over eight years, ever since the houses were built. The area was under the Chinna Vedampatty Town Panchayat limits before it became a part of the Corporation.
A good percentage of the 750 houses is police quarters.

The Corporation had tapped water from a sump in Chinna Mettupalayam to supply from the Athikadavu scheme. The supply would be around 35,000 litres a day.
V. Ramamoorthy, councillor, Ward 42, said that the residents had deposited money for water connection to the then Town Panchayat administration, which the Coimbatore Corporation had honoured. He clarified that the residents had access to ground water but were without drinking water.
Mr. Rajkumar said that the residents were thus far dependent on public taps in Saravanampatty for their needs. Henceforth, they could access water at the houses.

A release from the Corporation said that in the first phase, the civic body had provided water supply to 165 residents. For others – those who had deposited money – the civic body would provide the connection in the coming days.
Mr. Ramamoorthy said that in the process of providing connection to residents, the Corporation had also linked a nearby overhead tank, which the residents had constructed.
Apart from the Mayor, Mr. Rajkumar, Mr. Ramamoorthy, Executive Engineer K. Sugumar, Assistant Commissioner, North Zone, M. Sundararajan, and councillors were present on the occasion.
