Ragging: students asked to vacate hostel

More than 50 people staying in the government’s Adi Dravidar hostel on Balasundaram Road were sent out after they were found to be illegal occupants. The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Welfare Officer Senthil Vel, who conducted a surprise check following Collector T.N. Hariharan’s order also sent out four students following complaints of ragging.

Sources said that Mr. Vel went to the hostel around 1 a.m. Friday and concluded his check by 6 a.m. He found 50 people to be illegal occupants.

He also sent out Gopi and Chinnadurai, students of Government Arts and Science College, and Ilamparithi and Mohannan of a private college after they were found to be ragging junior students.

Fatally knocked down

Mettupalayam Nadar Colony resident Mohammad Sharif (72) was killed in an accident involving his two-wheeler and a car on the Mettupalayam-Annur Road.

The Sirumugai Police said the incident happened when Sharif was on his way to his vegetable shop.

In the impact of the collision, he was thrown off the vehicle, rushed by passers-by to the Mettupalayam government hospital, where doctors declared he was dead. The police have registered a case against the car driver.
