Release of a commemorative volume, laying of foundation for a women technology park and indoor auditorium, and inauguration of a women's training centre, were some of the highlights of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of PSGR Krishnammal College for Women that were held from September 3 to 7 in the city.
The first day function on Tuesday began with a march past and a dance performance by students.
B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore Kendra, addressed the gathering and gave away awards to those who had been associated with the college over 50 years.

Wednesday saw distinguished alumni receive awards. There was also a panel discussion on ‘Celebrating Women: Aspiration and Challenges’.
Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee, Siruthuli, Mirudubhashini Govindarajan, Clinical Director, Women’s Centre, Kezevino Aram, Director, Shanti Ashram, and Hemalatha Annamalai, founder, Ampere Vehicles, were the panellists. Sheela Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor of Avinashilingam University for Women, was the chief guest of the day. The evening ended with ‘Chocolate Krishna’, a play by Crazy Mohan and team.

The grand finale of the celebrations was held on Saturday. The chief guest of the evening was P. Palaniappan, Minister for Higher Education.
Lauding the service of the college in the field of education, the Minister said that in spite of efforts of the Government and such institutions, the enrolment of women in higher education was only around 10 per cent. This must improve in the next 10 years, he added.
He gave away ‘Long Service’ awards to faculty and non-teaching staff. There was a cultural show put up by students.
S. Damodaran, Minister of Agriculture, who inaugurated the women’s training centre, offered felicitations and urged the college to continue its service in the benefit of women in higher education. G. James Pitchai, Vice-chancellor of Bharathiar University, and S.M. Velusamy, Mayor, felicitated.
