The district unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has asked the State Government to create basic facilities at Sulur taluk, which was formed four years ago.
A delegation of CPI led by its Sulur Union Committee secretary P. Mounaswamy and M. Arumugam, MLA, submitted a petition to District Collector M. Karunagaran during the public grievances redress meeting here on Monday. They said 10,000 residents of Sulur had affixed their signatures in the petition. Sulur lacked a sub-treasury, a part-time Regional Transport Office (RTO), a Fire and Rescue Services Office, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) office, a women police station and a magistrate court. All of these should be established in a taluk head quarters.
Sulur was among the five places in the State for which a part-time RTO was announced in last year’s budget, said Mr. Mounaswamy.

A group of residents from Dhanalakshmi Nagar in Ward 6 of Kannampalayam Town Panchayat petitioned the district administration to stop a stone quarry in their locality, which they alleged was violating the government norms.
K.N. Shanmugam, Councillor, and residents submitted a petition to the District stating that the explosives being used in the quarry was creating panic among the residents. They alleged that the quarry operators were harassing the local residents and preventing people from constructing houses. R. Gayathri, Councillor, asked the district administration to remove a TASMAC-run liquor outlet at Chinthamani Nagar in Ward 12. There outlet was near a Vinayaka temple schools, she said. A welfare association run by fans of actor Vijay, in a petition, said bars in the district should remain closed during temple festivals.
Mr. Karunagaran disbursed aid worth Rs. 13.81 lakh to 71 beneficiaries under various social welfare schemes including a total of Rs. 25,600 to 15 students of Government Higher Secondary School at Rasipalayam who performed at the 2012 Independence Day celebrations in Coimbatore.
