More than 2,000 members of Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India on Sunday took out a rally and staged a protest in the city demanding reservation.

The protesters marched from Women's Polytechnic to Red Cross office around 4 p.m. The organisation's representatives said that they wanted 10 per cent reservation in Central government institutions and seven per cent reservation in State government institutions.

Quoting Sachar Committee report and Ranganath Mishra Committee report, they said that Muslims remained backward and in a few places their condition was worse than that of Scheduled Castes. The only way to help them move up the social ladder was through reservation.

In the State, the government should increase the reservation from 3.5 to 7 per cent. The current reservation percentage of 3.5 was not in proportion to their population, which was 5.6 per cent.

State Executive Committee member T.M. Ibrahim Badusha led the protests. K.K.S.M. Tehlan, SDPI State president, was also present. The representatives said that their next step would be to hold a nation-wide agitation to draw the attention of those in power.
