PDS rice smuggler detained under Goondas Act

T. Sudhakar alias Sottai Sudhakar (50) of Uppilipalayam, near Singanallur, who was allegedly involved in many incidents of smuggling and illegally selling rice reserved for distribution under the public distribution system was detained under Goondas Act on Thursday.

Food Cell Inspector T.H. Ganesh said that the accused was earlier smuggling rice to Kerala and off late he had been smuggling rice flour to that State.

On September 21, the police were checking vehicles near the Neelikonampalayam railway gate when Sudhakar was caught with 100 kg rice in two bags.

On inquiry, the police came to know that he rented a farmhouse at Chinniyampalayam to grind rice. The police said that 900 kg rice and 650 kg rice flour were seized from him.

Police sources said that he was detained under the Goondas Act in 2014.

Based on the recommendation of the civil supplies CID police, City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan, on Wednesday, passed the order detaining Sudhakar under the Act.

The detention order was served on the accused at the Coimbatore Central Prison on Thursday.
