The Anamalai police have on Friday arrested three persons on charges smuggling rice meant for public distribution to Kerala.
The police said that when a vehicle did not respond to the ‘stop’ signal at the check-post at Kalikavundanpudur, the police personnel present there, chased the lorry and intercepted the vehicle near Pochanari.
Even before the men in the vehicle could escape, the police caught them. The police identified the three as Anand, 24, of Andipatti, Karthik, 22, of Pollachi, and Nawaz, 26, also of Pollachi. Anand was the driver and the other two were with him in the vehicle.

The police found the three carrying two tonne rice without necessary documents and learnt that the rice was meant for public distribution system. After questioning, the police arrested the three, seized the rice and also the vehicle. They have registered a case in this connection.
Employee held
Race Course police have arrested S. Kannappan, 33, on charging of robbing his employer, who runs an automobile spare parts shop on Cross Cut Road.

The police said that Kannappan did not remit in the shop account the money his employer gave him. This came to light when the manager verified the account. He then lodged a complaint with the police, who after investigations, said that Kannappan had also fudged the passbook. Based on the complaint, the police arrested and sent him to remand.
Fire in running bus
A minor fire broke out in a bus near the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Saturday afternoon. According to sources, passengers of the bus that was proceeding from Vadavalli to Ondipudur got down soon after they noticed smoke coming out of the engine. The residents of the area rushed in with water to douse the fire. None was injured.
Hunt on for mother and daughter
Chettipalayam police are on the lookout for a mother-daughter duo after it came to light that they had cheated a retired teacher of a portion of his pension.
The police said that when Senguttuvan, 65, went to the post office in the area to check the balance in monthly savings account, he found that the account was closed at least two years ago and that no money was credited to the account since then. He had been giving Rs. 2,000 to Rajalakshmi and her daughter Sowmya to credit the money into his account. After realising that he had been cheated, he lodged a complaint with the police, who have registered a case in this connection.
Two killed in accidents
B. Hariraj, 20, who sustained injuries in an accident on Monday last died at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Saturday. He was a resident of Sundarapuram. The Traffic Investigation Wing Police have registered a case in this connection.
In another incident, Shamina Babu, 46, a resident of Sai Garden, Kuniamuthur, was killed in an accident on Friday.
According to the Traffic Investigation Wing Police, the incident happened when an unidentified person had kicked the motorcycle she was travelling in. She fell off from the motorcycle, sustained head injuries and died on the spot. A few minutes prior to the incident an unidentified person had tried to snatch the cash she was carrying in. The police said that the accused should have followed her after they noticed her withdrawing cash from an ATM in Sundarapuram. The police have registered a case in this connection.
